Three Important Tips to Find the Right Tariff for Your EV Home Charge Point

According to new research from the AA, EV owners who fail to find the right energy tariff for their vehicles may end up paying 3.5 times more than those who do. Choosing the most suitable tariff can help you optimize your charging costs, save money, and make the most of your EV ownership. In this blog, we'll discuss three important tips to help you navigate the process and find the right tariff for your EV home charging needs.

1. Research and Compare Tariffs:

To begin your journey toward finding the ideal tariff for your EV home charge point, start by conducting thorough research and comparing the available options.

Explore Different Energy Providers: Investigate the various tariffs available from providers and identify the ones that offer specific tariffs for EV charging or smart (time-of-use) tariffs. If you have gas, make sure you compare different providers’ gas rates as well.

Consider Smart tariffs: Smart tariffs are extremely advantageous for EV owners. These tariffs typically offer four different electricity rates depending on the time of day, with a super cheap night “boost” rate ranging from 2 am to 5 am, where electricity costs only around 10 cents per kW.

You can use WeSwitchU.ie to quickly compare providers and find the best electricity and dual fuel tariffs. WeSwitchU is the only switching platform currently on the market that offers the full range of smart, day and night and non-smart tariffs.

2. Analyse Your Charging Habits:

Understanding your charging habits is crucial when selecting the right tariff. Consider the following factors:

  • Your EV specs: The type of EV you have, the number of kilometers you drive annually, and your battery size all affect how much energy you need to charge your EV daily. These factors will affect which smart tariff is right for you. For instance, would you benefit more from a three-hour night charging window and a higher peak, or will a lower peak with a two-hour charging window suffice?  WeSwitchU’s platform can calculate your EV charging needs based on your:
    • Type of EV (BEV or PHEV)
    • Annual driving distance
    • Battery size

  • Flexibility and Off-Peak Charging: Assess whether you have the flexibility to charge your EV during off-peak hours. If you can take advantage of lower rates during specific time periods, a smart tariff is right for you.

3. Seek Expert Advice:

If you find yourself unsure or overwhelmed by the tariff selection process, consider seeking advice from energy experts. WeSwitchU can provide valuable insights based on your specific circumstances.
